House of Voltaire is a pop up shop come gallery offering a diverse treasure trove of original works and objects donated by a multitude of leading contemporary artists. The space is far from conventional. Its dark green walls are brimming with unique creations, from an exquisite Wolfgang Tillmans print to Donald Urquhart’s hand painted dog bowls for the cultured canine. The proceeds from all of the sales will be put back into the organization so that we can continue to see its artist community flourish.

Cool Hunting for Gap pop-up shop
395

I visited the Cool Hunting for Gap pop-up shop in midtown Manhattan, featuring products hand-selected by the website’s editors. The store’s décor and most gifts were locally sourced, showcasing talented New York designers. Collaborations include Mast Brothers chocolate bars, custom kimono-covered skateboards by Zillion, and the highly coveted Jawbone Jambox. Cool Hunting’s Executive Editor Evan Orensten explained that this store was a great way to translate Cool Hunting’s “digitalness into physicalness”. It’s open from now until the end of the year.

394

British designer Victoria Bartlett has opened her new VPL flagship on Mercer Street in Manhattan’s Soho. Bartlett’s chic and modern undergarments are perfectly juxtaposed with the store design, which brings to mind a vintage gymnasium. The VPL collection lines both sides of the space, displayed on racks hung by rope from the ceiling. A punching bag, weights, and exercise rings all add to the store’s retro-athletic aesthetic, highlighting the rich color and exquisite construction of Bartlett’s collection.

393

This week, the Camron interns visited The National Gallery to see Clive Head’s remarkable paintings of London. The three works on display are examples of ‘extreme photo realism’ and make you wonder if you are looking at a photograph. But the paintings have achieved what no camera lens can do in terms of perspective and detail, creating a sense of movement which draws you in to the image. The exhibition book, Clive Head by Michael Paraskos, shows even more iconic views of London and New York.

Tucked away in Primrose Hill, The Museum of Everything‘s current show is a delight and a collectors’ paradise. Anyone who has ever arranged curios on a shelf will savour Peter Blake’s collection of seashell ornaments, puppets, Punch and Judy shows, photos of bearded ladies, midgets and giants plus all the fun of the fair, complete with miniature carousels, hall of mirrors and shooting gallery. The collection of Potter’s stuffed furry animals in playful ‘tableaux’ is weirdly disquieting but enormous fun.
