This week we were lucky enough to attend the preview of Barbara Hulanicki’s new capsule collection for Topshop, and most excitingly for us get our mitts on the designs before the collection hits stores next week. The venue, Millers Academy, couldn’t have been better. With its extravagantly decorated interiors and distinctly bohemian vibe, it was like a flash-back to the Biba days – except these were today’s fashionistas hungrily grabbing at the rails for a piece of the iconic, retro-chic Biba pie! Needless to say we weren’t to be outdone and all left with bags in our hands…this collection is sure to be a sell out!
Thursday I joined an über-cool East End crowd at Gallery FUMI for the debut of ‘Les French’, an exhibition by Studio Glithero. The designers Tim and Sarah were on hand to show their latest work: an eclectic collection of end tables, cabinets and drawer units wrapped in tan or charcoal coloured gum-paper strips. The off-skew, quirky pieces had little personalities of their own, propped up on bronze-cast bamboo pedestals, dancing together across a narrow runway with witty names like Faux Pas and Déjà Vu scribbled next to each one. Inspired by a French family who commissioned the duo, ‘Les French’ is trés chic!
Covent Garden came to a standstill today when wives of world leaders attending the G20 Summit stopped by to see the ballet, Giselle at The Royal Opera House. As we looked out of our office windows Floral Street was closed off and there were police vans and secret service everywhere. Streets around Covent Garden were in gridlock by lunchtime and there was an air of anticipation as everyone chatted with security. Our favorite café in Floral Street was forced to close for the day – and then, suddenly, the cars with their blacked out windows moved off and our connection with London’s big event was over.
