LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL

Now in its ninth year, The London Design Festival has established itself as a major event on the international design calendar, appealing to an increasingly wide audience, from consumers to professionals to students and all those with a keen interest in design. MARTIN BRUDNIZKI

Martin Brudnizki has become one of the most sought-after interior designers. His ‘minimalism deluxe’ style suits glamorous locations such as Soho Beach House, Le Caprice, Scotts and Cecconi’s. Brudnizki applies the same philosophy to an entirely different concept in affordable local restaurants (Jamie’s Italian and Côte) and a neighborhood food emporium (Recipease) for Jamie Oliver. In 2011, Brudnizki completed the interiors of three of the most significant new restaurants on the London dining scene: Le Caprice for their 30th Anniversary, The Rib Room for their 50th Anniversary and 34, the new power lunch and dinner destination for London’s elite. LEE BROOM

Lee Broom founded his company four years ago and has since gone on to become one of the UK’s leading product and interior designers. Broom designs, manufactures and retails his own collections, in addition to collaborating with other leading brands such as Heals, Deadgood and Philips. The importance of the manufacturing process is integral to Broom’s philosophy with all of his unique contemporary pieces produced in Britain. In his career to-date, Broom has launched six furniture and lighting collections – most recently a dramatic debut upholstery collection entitled ‘Salon’ inspired the curvaceous lines of 1930s upholstery, with a hint of fashion fetishism. As well as designed over 40 retail, restaurant and bar interiors and won more than 17 awards.

BOCCI

Bocci is a contemporary design and manufacturing company dedicated to designing and making objects which have meaning, value and worth. Founded in 2005 by entrepreneur Randy Bishop, who continues to own and operate the company along with its young Creative Director Omer Arbel, Bocci has become an atypical phenomenon within the contemporary design landscape. The company is founded in a fundamental commitment to define a sustainable community that “makes sense” within the rapidly changing and increasingly strange world around us. Bocci’s factory and headquarters are located in Vancouver, Canada, where its collection of pieces is produced. Bocci has a quickly growing satellite office and warehouse in Berlin, Germany.

OMER ARBEL

Omer Arbel established OAO – Omer Arbel Office – in Vancouver in 2005. Arbel’s inventive exploration of the aesthetic as well as the technological has found form in a range of experimental furniture, lighting and building design. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Canada Council’s Ron Thom Early Design Achievement Award and D&AD Yellow Pencil. Arbel recently unveiled designs for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic medals, and a house called 23.2 which has been shortlisted for a World Architecture Festival award. He is also the creative director of manufacturing and design company Bocci.

FLOS

Iconic Italian company Flos was founded in 1962 with lighting designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and Tobia Scarpa. In 1988 Flos began working with Philippe Starck and collaborations followed with designers including Jasper Morrison, Konstantin Grcic, Marc Newson, Antonio Citterio, Marcel Wanders, Sebastian Wrong, Rodolfo Dordoni, Patricia Urquiola, Ron Gilad, and others. Piero Gandini, Flos’s President and CEO, says that lighting should ‘combine great design with cutting-edge technology’. Camron also represents Atrium, the UK distributor for Flos’s architectural lighting range, which opened a new showroom in London in early 2011.

FRANCIS SULTANA

On the 17th May 2011, Francis Sultana has debuted with his first collection of furniture in the elegant setting of Claridge’s French Room. Taking inspiration from the great couture houses of Paris, he will now show two collections a year, as well as continuing to create unique pieces to commission. ‘Homage to the Art Deco’ is a carefully edited body of work that is rooted in the classic aesthetic which translates in the richness of materials, attention to luxurious detailing and harnessing the increasingly rare skills of dedicated craftspeople. Francis Sultana’s recent projects include a London mansion, a Greek island retreat as well as two Manhattan properties – an Upper East Side pied-a-terre and a grand-scale SoHo apartment.

WOOP STUDIOS

WOOP Studios is a new UK-based graphic arts studio founded by a group of friends united through a love of graphic design, words and images to bring a unique and exciting angle to the fascinating world of collective nouns. Their rapidly growing portfolio started with two alphabets of 52 images – one for the collective nouns and one for the collective terms found in the animal kingdom. Woop has combined words, images and sounds in a creative and playful way to bring this magical subject matter to life. From an ‘embarrassment of pandas’, ‘implausibility of Gnus’ to a ’huddle of penguins, the limited edition prints are a delight to discover. Two books, flash cards and a journal are already on the way.

CHELSEA TEXTILES

Chelsea Textiles began twenty years ago with a desire to faithfully recreate rare antique fabric designs from the seventeenth century, using authentic materials, hand-worked by master craftsmen. Since then, the company has expanded its range to include mid-century modern fabric designs and a variety of furniture, under the Chelsea Editions brand name, which works comfortably within traditional and contemporary interiors. This year the company has collaborated with international interior designer Alidad, on his second fabric collection, and Neisha Crosland who has taken designs from her archive and translated them into hand-embroidered fabrics.

WORLD DESIGN CAPITAL: HELSINKI

World Design Capital is an initiative of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, an international non-governmental organization that aims to protect and promote the profession of industrial design. With more than half the world’s population now living in urban areas, design has become an increasingly important tool in making cities more attractive, more liveable, and more efficient. Held biennially, the World Design Capital initiative seeks to highlight the accomplishments of cities that are truly leveraging design as a tool to improve the social, cultural, and economic life of urban areas. THE ARCHITECTURE FOUNDATION

Established in 1991 as Britain’s first independent architecture centre, The Architecture Foundation is a non-profit agency for contemporary architecture, urbanism and culture which aims to cultivate new talent and new ideas. It has organised hundreds of public exhibitions, design initiatives, competitions and debates in venues across Britain and internationally. The Foundation facilitates international and interdisciplinary exchanges, stimulates critical engagement amongst professionals, policy makers and a broad public, and shapes the quality of the built environment. MOST

MOST, a new and important destination during Salone del Mobile 2012 instigated by Tom Dixon, will turn the National Museum of Science and Technology Milan into an ambitious environment for innovation and culture. The creative partnership between Tom Dixon, Ambra Medda and Martina Mondadori will also include a diverse group of leading global brands and young designers and be located in the extraordinary historic spaces of the museum from Tuesday 17 – Sunday 22 April 2012. This collision of technology, culture and design is set to be one of Milan’s highlights.
