Design Miami/ is the world’s best known and most extensive forum for international design, representing a convergence of commerce and culture. Its annual shows in Basel, Switzerland (June) and Miami, USA (December) bring together the most influential designers, collectors, dealers, curators and critics from around the world. Earlier this year a visionary new store opened in Paris. Merci is a store that mixes fashion with philanthropy, vintage with contemporary design and bespoke creations with mainstream brands. Founders Marie France and Bernard Cohen conceived the idea of Merci as a store that would set a new benchmark in retail. With their creative team, they have developed an historic building in the stylish Haut Marais district now filled with furniture, homeware, fashion and objets d’art. Other features include a florist in the courtyard and a literary café where customers can buy a second hand book to read with their coffee. Monocle’s annual list of the world’s ‘most liveable’ cities has hit the headlines again. This year Zurich topped the ranking in the magazine’s Quality of Life issue, which is out now. NEO BANKSIDE

NEO Bankside will be the South Bank’s first truly world-class residential development. Situated immediately adjacent to the Tate Modern, the cluster of four pavilions provides a total of 197 apartments and penthouses set within extensively landscaped gardens. OMER ARBEL

Omer Arbel is a renowned architect and designer who established OAO – Omer Arbel Office – in Vancouver in 2003. Arbel’s inventive exploration of the aesthetic as well as the technological has found form in a range of experimental furniture, lighting and architectural design. He is best known for the sleek and sculptural 2.4 Chair, which is now a collector’s item. SONY

Sony has linked up with UK design duo Edward Jay and Barber Osgerby to create an unusual installation in the Zona Tortona for the Salone in Milan in April.The design collaborators are looking at ways in which electronics products can evolve and integrate much more with furniture and a domestic lifestyle. The collection of prototypes will be displayed in a specially constructed anechoic chamber, a space with low ambient noise constructed from sound-absorbing cones.

SPIRAL CELLARS

The Spiral Cellar is an ingenious idea for wine-lovers,
allowing you to keep your wine at home so it is easily accessible and maintained in the perfect conditions. The Spiral Cellars team will come to any property with a ground floor, dig a 2m wide circular hole
and then drop in a prefabricated circular cellar. The cellar can be sunk in the kitchen, sitting room, garage or conservatory. Once it’s completed, which takes only five days from start to finish, it will offer exactly the right conditions for keeping wine – the correct temperature, darkness and humidity. There are different sizes of cellar too, from the Mini Cellar, which can store up to 770 bottles, to the larger Spiral Cellar which will store 1600 bottles.
